Numerous intertwined small silver-plated chain links. Lid fastener with a small elephant sitting on top. When the lid is opened, the lattice edging widens and a small button with a stylised flower sits at the bottom to weigh down the chain link bag.
There is a ring for a chain or chatelaine. As Victorian women's dresses were impractical and had no pockets, practical small items were often attached to chatelaines, e.g. to carry coins for going to church.
Height closed 10 cm (3.9 inches) , diameter 4 cm (1.5 inches) when open at the top
No recognizable flaws in the chain mesh, net. Very good antique condition.
An antiques dealer and expert friend of ours told us that it is a antique Hermès coin purse.
