The Karaatti Series designed by Timo Sarpaneva consists of various serving dishes and glasses. The bowl connects glass and an easily recognizable, beautiful holder familiar from Tsaikka glasses. A convenient holder makes it easier for serving and moving the dishes.
Designer Timo Sarpaneva found the inspiration for the pattern of the holders after visiting a zipper factory. The first holders were made for Tsaikka glasses and out of perforated metal sheets that were excess material from the zipper factory. Holders were later also used for the Karaatti series.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was a Finnish designer who contributed to making Finnish design well-known in the world. He graduated from the Institute for Industrial Arts (the forerunner of the University of Arts and Design Helsinki) in 1948. Even though he was trained as a graphic designer, he spent the majority of his life working as an industrial designer.
